We are pleased to announce that Dr. Gibbs has returned from Maternity leave.  She and her husband are the proud parents of Josephine Renee Clabaugh.  She was born on August 28,2008 and weighed in at 8 lbs 10.5 ounces and 21 3/4 inches.

Dr. Gibbs joined Shadowridge in September 2004 and one of our nurses introduced her to her future husband Brant in October of that year.  When Brant did not run at the sight of all her pets, she decided to marry him in May 2007.

Who knew when we asked Dr. Gibbs to join our Shadowridge Vet family that it would lead to a family of her own!

Bringing Home Your
Holiday Pet

santa photo

The Holidays are by far one of the most popular times for introducing a new pet into the family.  What child hasn't dreamt of finding a warm, soft, cuddly, wiggly package under the tree on Christmas morning?  What parent hasn't fantasized about the look on their child's face as they discover that the present Santa brought them is not just a toy, but a potential best friend and playmate?  There is very little in life that is as fulfilling as the moment both you and your child realize that dream.

Holiday pets bring much joy into the lives of their new human companions.  Whether it be a puppy or kitten, guinea pig or hamster, ferret or mouse, or tortoise or snake the potential for fun and excitement and discovery is unmatched.

This excitement can be preserved even when the newness wears thin and the responsibility sets in, if you are fully prepared before you bring your new pet home.  Statistics show that children raised in households with pets are more empathetic, sympathetic and responsible than their pet-free household peers.  Animals are used in therapy for children recovering from serious illness and severe trauma because studies show that having a pet can actually reduce stress and consequently expedite healing.  There are even studies that suggest that owning a pet can prolong one's life!

So what can you do to be sure that the challenge of introducing a new pet into your home and teaching your child to care for it doesn't make you crazy?
  1. Be prepared.  Do your research. Familiarize yourself with your pet's species and breed.  Research your pet's personality traits and be sure they are compatible with your lifestyle.  Books, Breed rescue groups, breeders and your veterinarian can help you gain this information.
  2. Be sure you have the proper housing, food and supplies for your pet.
  3. If you adopt your pet from a shelter or rescue organization, spend some time getting to know your pet before bringing him or her home. If you are adopting from a breeder, then try to choose the puppy or kitten that is calm and likes to be held on its back.   A hyper puppy or unruly kitty grows into a difficult to control adult.
  4. Locate a group training class nearby to help socialize your new pet.  Click here to visit Kindred Spirits Dog Training in Vista and learn more about training and socialization.
  5. Choose a veterinarian with experience with your pet's species and breed.
  6. Schedule a "get to know you" appointment that includes the whole family, your new pet and the veterinarian to learn how to best care for your pet and keep him healthy throughout his life.

It's a sad fact that many animals relinquished to shelters are there because the owners were not prepared for the commitment of owning a pet.  This could be prevented if the owners had done the proper research.  Take the time to do this research, and prepare yourself and your home and I promise you, the years of unconditional love your pet rewards you with will be well worth it.

Baby Teeth in Dogs

Those sharp little pin prick teeth won't last forever...or will they?

Most dogs start to lose their front baby teeth  at 8-12 weeks of age.  Between 4-7 months of age, the large canine or fang teeth will be pushed out by the emerging adult teeth.

Unfortunately this does not happen smoothly in every pet. Sometimes, the adult tooth does not push out the tooth and instead tries to detour around the baby tooth.  The double fang appearance seen above is the classic look for this condition.

If the baby tooth is not removed, it will trap food and bacteria in between the teeth.  Over time, this will lead to an infection that travels down to the root.  Eventually, both teeth will become loose and diseased.  In addition, the adult tooth will often emerge in an abnormal position, rubbing or knocking against other teeth in the mouth.

The baby tooth and its entire root must be removed.  With Digital Dental Xray, we are able to identify the tooth root position and remove it safely.  If the tooth is broken or cracked, it could lead to permanent problems in the mouth.  What you see in the mouth is only the tip of the iceberg.

The key to a healthy mouth is to examine it routinely. If you see an adult tooth coming in next to the baby tooth instead of pushing it out, then make an appointment to have it removed right away.
